Hypersomnia is a sleep disorder that causes you to feel the need for sleep during the day. People with hypersomnia will exhibit excessive daytime sleepiness or prolonged nighttime sleep; they can fall asleep at anytime of day and will often take frequent naps with out relief of sleepiness.
There are three types of Hypersomnia:
Recurrent Hypersomnia:
Sufferers have repeated extreme sleepiness and large sleep requirements. Can require as much as 16 to 20 hours of sleep a day .
Idiopathic Hypersomnia:
Sufferers complain of excessive sleepiness and prolonged sleep at night with numerous non-REM sleep periods of up to 2 hours.
Posttraumatic Hypersomnia:
Excessive sleepiness that develops as the result of physical injury or disease in the central nervous system.
Some symptoms of hypersomnia might include:
- Feeling unusually tired all the time
- The need for daytime naps
- Feeling drowsy, despite sleeping and napping
- Difficulty thinking and making decisions
- Apathy
- Memory or concentration difficulties
- An increased risk of accidents, especially motor vehicle accidents
